At Whisper Controls, we know that heating your home efficiently isn’t just about the thermostat—it is also about the air inside your rooms.
There is a common belief that keeping windows tightly shut in winter saves heat. Surprisingly, this can actually make your home colder and harder to heat. We want to introduce you to a method called Stoßlüften (Shock Ventilation).
A Global Habit (That the UK forgot)
While the Germans have made it famous, they aren't the only ones who understand the power of fresh air in winter. Across the colder parts of Europe, "shock ventilation" is a standard daily routine:
- Scandinavia: In Sweden, they call it Vädra (to air out), essential for surviving Nordic winters.
- The Netherlands: The Dutch government advises citizens to Luchten—throwing windows wide open for short bursts.
- France: The French practice Aérer every morning to "change the air."
Why is this a "Blind Spot" in the UK?
Historically, UK homes were draughty. With open chimneys and single-glazed sash windows, the wind blew through our homes constantly. We didn't need to open windows because the house ventilated itself (and lost all its heat in the process).
Today, we have airtight double glazing. We’ve stopped the draughts, but we haven't updated our habits. The moisture is now trapped, causing damp and mould.
Is this official advice? Yes. In UK Building Regulations (Approved Document F), this is technically known as "Purge Ventilation." Your windows are legally required to be capable of opening wide to rapidly remove pollutants and water vapour.
- Trickle Vents vs. Purge: Many people rely solely on "Trickle Vents" (the slots at the top of the frame). These provide slow, passive airflow. Stoßlüften is the "Active" version—using the window’s full "Purge" capability to change the air in minutes rather than hours.
The Science: Why it saves you money
It might feel wrong to open your windows on a freezing UK morning, but physics is on your side.
- Dry air heats faster than wet air Think of the air in your home like a sponge. In winter, indoor air gets "soggy" with humidity. Heating up "soggy" air takes a lot of energy because you have to heat all the water droplets floating in it. Cold outside air is naturally dry. When you swap the wet indoor air for dry outdoor air, your heating system has much less work to do.
- Walls and Floors stay warm Because you are only opening the windows for a few minutes, you change the air, but you don't give the furniture, walls, or floors enough time to get cold. This heat is stored in the "fabric" of your house. As soon as you close the window, that stored heat radiates back out, warming the fresh air almost instantly.
Step-by-Step: How to do it properly
- Go Wide, Not Tilted: Do not leave your windows "cracked" or tilted open. This lets heat bleed out without clearing the stale air. You must open the windows fully.
- Create a Draught: Open windows on opposite sides of the house (or room) at the same time to flush old air out instantly.
- The 5-Minute Rule: Set a timer. In winter, 5 minutes is plenty.
- Twice a Day: Once in the morning and once in the evening is ideal.
IMPORTANT: Advice for your specific system
For Heat Pumps & Underfloor Heating (UFH) If you have a Heat Pump or UFH, this method is essential.
- Why: Heat pumps work best when maintaining a steady temperature. If you leave a window tilted for hours, you strip the heat from your floors and walls. Your heat pump (which warms up slowly) will struggle to recover that lost heat.
- The Trick: Do not turn your thermostat down for the 5 minutes you are ventilating. Just let the system run. Because the floor stays warm, the system remains stable.
For MVHR or PIV Systems STOP! If you have a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system or a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit (often found in the loft), you do not need to do this.
- Why: Your system is already exchanging the air 24/7. Opening windows will unbalance your system and waste the heat the machine is trying to recover. Let your system do the work!
